What is on the front pages in Washington, DC? The 2004 Presidential election? Arnold and the California recall? public policy? national security? Iraq? Does technology make the list?
How are front page and other editorial decisions made at one of the world's most important city newspapers in a time of national security threats and 9/11, business and political scandals from Enron to Lewinsky, economic recession and rebound, controversial wars, 24-hour news cycles, and the tabloidization of politics and the press? Learn the answers as Washington Post executive editor Len Downie, Jr. sits down with Forbes publisher Rich Karlgaard at the Churchill Club.
Downie joined The Post in 1964 as a summer intern and went on to become a
well-known local investigative reporter, the Metropolitan section reporter
and then editor where he supervised The Post's Watergate coverage (and no,
he doesn't know the identity of Deep Throat), author, and now Executive Editor.
Paul Begala of CNN said of Downie "Aside from the president of the United States, he is probably the most powerful guy in Washington."
You'll get a behind-the-scenes look at The Post and how they make editorial decisions and hear some of stories-behind-the headlines of the past forty years. This is a rare opportunity for us in Silicon Valley to not only hear from Len but also ask candid questions on any topic.
This is a different format for the Club-a smaller, more intimate program to give you the chance to ask questions and talk with our speakers. The evening will begin with the discussion followed by networking and appetizers when you'll have the opportunity to personally meet Mr. Downie and continue the dialogue begun during the program.
This members-only program is limited to 150 attendees so please register early to ensure your place at this event.
