When the browser first came on the scene 17 years ago, it had a straightforward mission: display the content, mostly text, that was springing up on the newborn World Wide Web. Since then, browsers have been transformed into massive programs requiring speed, stability on multiple platforms, security, a great user interface, and the ability to manage an ever-growing array of plug-ins that are often complex programs in their own right.

Competition among browsers has waxed and waned, but in 2008 it became red-hot again with the release of Mozilla’s Firefox 3, Apple’s Safari for Windows inclusion in iTunes and QuickTime updates, and, in September, Google’s beta release of Chrome. And even with all the players vying for market share, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer continues to hold onto 50%-75% of usage share.

As today's changing marketplace spreads from desktops and laptops to smartphones and other mobile devices, and as more applications move into the cloud, the role of the browser has expanded dramatically. It is in the browser environment, rather than the native operating system desktop, where a lot of computer users spend most of their time. This is becoming true even on mobile devices, where Opera is challenging Internet Explorer in Microsoft’s backyard.

So what can we expect in the next-generation browsers? What features will be added? What kinds of content will they support? What role will they play in the enterprise? What effect will they have on search? What are the financials? Mobile browsing is in its infancy…who are the players and will anyone dominate?

Steve Wildstrom, Technology & You columnist for BusinessWeek, will lead this discussion among senior executives of key browser competitor companies. It promises to be a lively discussion and will pull back the curtain on the present and future of this important technology.
