Distributed ledger technology, or blockchain, is commonly known for powering digital currency exchange and mobile payments. Beyond finance, there is growing buzz around emerging applications in energy, food, retail, supply chain, healthcare, education, government, and far more. Apart from fintech, where is the greatest innovation happening in distributed ledger technology—and where is the advanced thinking coming from? What industrial applications are emerging, and what is the timeframe to achieve greater potential? What’s the importance and prospective impact of open standards and open source software? What is the role and importance of ecosystems? Does adoption of blockchain mean an evolutionary change that companies will take in stride, or will it be revolutionary and obsolete old models, such as when the Internet arrived? How concurrently will skillsets in the labor force evolve? What is happening in Silicon Valley to speed up the development of blockchain applications?
